TritylaMine (CAS 5824-40-8): What Buyers Don't Know Until They've Had a Bad Batch

TritylaMine

When the Yield Dropped Without Warning

A process chemist in South Korea described a frustrating production issue to me. They’d been running a reductive amination using TritylaMine (CAS 5824-40-8) from the same Chinese supplier for two years without problems. Then one batch gave them a yield drop of almost 15%. Nothing had changed in the process.

After extensive testing they found the amine had partially oxidized in transit — probably due to a seal failure on the drum. The purity on the CoA was correct when the material shipped. By the time it arrived, the effective concentration had dropped.

The supplier offered a replacement. But the lost production time was already gone.

The Stability Issue Most Buyers Miss

Amines as a class are more sensitive to storage conditions than most buyers account for. TritylaMine in particular has a shelf life that depends heavily on whether the container is truly sealed after each use.

Moisture can cause hydrolysis. Oxygen causes oxidation and discoloration. Both lead to yield loss and unexpected byproducts. If you’re buying in bulk and resealing containers between uses, you should be running an assay on the material periodically — not just trusting the original CoA.

Most buyers don’t do this. Most buyers are fine. Some aren’t, and when they’re not, it’s expensive.

Quality Parameters That Actually Matter

For TritylaMine, the relevant purity metrics are: GC purity (for volatile amines), HPLC purity (for heavier ones), water content by Karl Fischer, and color by APHA. Don’t accept a CoA that only gives you one of these.

Related amines — structural isomers — are the most common impurities. Ask specifically about them. A supplier who can give you an impurity profile by name is better than one who gives you a single purity number.

What sdlookchem Provides

Shandong Lookchemical produces TritylaMine (CAS 5824-40-8) with multi-point QC testing. Every commercial batch is tested for GC or HPLC purity, water content, and appearance before release.

Packaging options include amber glass for small quantities and HDPE drums for bulk orders. Inert atmosphere packing available on request.
sdlookchem provides batch-specific CoA, SDS/MSDS, and export documentation. Technical queries are handled by in-house chemists who can discuss method details.
