What is Welan Gum?
Welan gum, a microbial polysaccharide of industrial grade, contains neutral sugars, D-glucose and D-glucuronic acids, as well as L-rhamnose, L-mannose as well as glycosides-bonded acetyl esters.

The 200610012511.0 patent discloses the preparation of Welan gum. Welan gum as it is currently known is a powder that has good temperature resistance. Its aqueous solutions have good viscosity, rheological characteristics and can tolerate high calcium ions concentrations. It can be used in the cement industry as an admixture to improve ore sand’s consistency and rheological characteristics, increase concrete self-compacting stability, and increase the resistance of mud cement to water seepage.

Welan Gum Uses
Use in tire sealants, coating thickeners, cement or concrete, polymers and oilfield applications. It is used to thicken, suspend and provide rheological characteristics for oil mud in the drilling industry.
- Welan glue is produced by deep fermentation with Alcaligenes species. Due to its thickening properties and anti-segregation, it is used in cement mortar and concrete as well as other building materials.
- Welan glue has a good temperature resistance and is a powder. Its aqueous solutions have good viscosity, rheological characteristics and can tolerate high calcium ions concentrations. It is used as an admixture in the cement industry to improve ore sand’s consistency and rheological characteristics, increase concrete self-compacting stability, and increase pressure resistance.
- Commercial applications of Welan glue are found in cement systems. It is used as a thickener and suspending agent. It can also be used for adhesives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and tackifiers. It is also useful in oil drilling because it retains its viscosity and stability at high temperatures.
Applications of Welan Gum
Pseudoplastic water-based pigment ink composition:
Using a compound of Weinlun gum and gum arabic as a pseudoplastic additive can not only control the viscosity of the ink under different shear forces and improve the storage stability of the ink, but also significantly improve the decapping stability of the ink. In the present invention, the thixotropic additive system of the neutral pen ink composition is composed of a compound of Weinlun gum accounting for 0.1-0.8% of the total mass of the ink and gum arabic accounting for 1-10%. In the neutral pen ink composition disclosed by the present invention, when a small amount of Weinlun gum is added, a higher amount of gum arabic is required to make the ink system achieve a satisfactory viscosity. At the same time, a higher amount of gum arabic is beneficial to bind volatile components such as water in the ink composition and improve the decapping stability of the ink.
