Product function:

  • Sodium Cyanoborohydride (NaBH3CN) is used as a weakly selective reducing reagent in modern organic synthesis. It can reduce imines, iminium salts, oximes and oxime derivatives, hydrazones and enamines, and can reductively deoxidize carbonyl groups through sulfonic acid hydrazones. Can reduce aldehydes, ketones, polar olefins and alkyl halides. Several groups of compounds, epoxides, acetals, and allyl esters.
  • Sodium Cyanoborohydride is a reagent controlled by the pH of the reaction system. The reducing ability is strongest under acidic conditions, for example, when the pH of the system is <4, aldehydes and ketones can be reduced to their corresponding alcohols. However, since this reagent is much more expensive than NaBH4, this function is covered by NaBH4.
  • When the pH of the system is between 5 and 8, sodium cyanoborohydride reduces aldehydes and ketones very slowly. However, under these conditions imine and imine ions can be rapidly reduced and other functional groups such as esters and lactones, nitro groups, halides or epoxy compounds are not affected. However, at an acidity of pH = 5, aldehydes and ketones can form iminium ions with primary and secondary amines, creating suitable conditions for the reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones.
  • Reductive amination is a characteristic reaction of sodium cyanoborohydride and is one of the most commonly used methods for preparing amines from aldehydes and ketones in organic chemistry. The reaction is usually carried out in a methanol solution and the pH value is adjusted with HCl, acetic acid or other buffering reagents. The reaction is usually completed in several hours to several tens of hours at room temperature, and the yield is medium to high. Polycyclic compounds can be obtained by reaction with chiral aminophenols using dicarbonyl compounds.

Product stability:

Sodium Cyanoborohydride is stable, hygroscopic, reacts violently with water to release hydrogen and burns. For fires involving this chemical, do not use water, use dry soda ash. Incompatible with strong acids, water and strong oxidants.
