Product Introduction:

Propylene Carbonate (usually abbreviated as PC) is a colorless, odorless, flammable liquid with the molecular formula CH3C2H3O2CO.

Propylene Carbonate is a carbonate ester derived from propylene glycol. This colorless and odorless liquid can be used as a polar aprotic solvent.

It can be miscible with ether, benzene, chloroform, vinyl acetate and other solutions, and it is soluble in water and carbon tetrachloride.

Cyclic carbonates include five-membered ring, six-membered ring, seven-membered ring carbonate, and seven-membered or more macrocyclic carbonates, of which propylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate are the most widely used.

Propylene Carbonate is chiral, but it is only used as a racemic mixture.

Its products have a strong ability to absorb carbon dioxide and are stable in nature.

Propylene carbonate is a kind of high boiling point solvent and surfactant material with excellent polarity. It is widely used in plastics, printing and dyeing, polymer synthesis, gas separation, electrochemistry and other fields.

Product Usage:

Propylene Carbonate is a polar solvent, so it can be used as spinning solvent, plasticizer, dispersant for water-soluble dyes and plastics, as well as oily solvent and extractant for products such as olefins and aromatics.

As a high-efficiency solvent, it is used to remove carbon dioxide from petroleum gas, petroleum cracked gas, oil field gas and synthetic ammonia feed gas.

Propylene Carbonate as the electrolyte of the battery can withstand harsh light, heat and chemical changes.

In the textile industry, it can be used as an auxiliary and fixing agent for synthetic fibers.

In the battery industry, it can be used as an excellent medium for lithium batteries.

In the polymer industry, Propylene Carbonate can be used as a solvent for polymers.

Not only that, the product also has certain uses in geological beneficiation and analytical chemistry.

In addition, in terms of adhesives, propylene carbonate can also be used as a material to replace phenolic resin and also used to synthesize dimethyl carbonate.

Production Method (For Reference Only):

At present, there are many ways to produce Propylene Carbonate. Next, let me introduce you to the five common ways to produce Propylene Carbonate.

  1. Propylene glycol, the raw material of the phosgene method, reacts with phosgene to generate hydroxyisopropyl chloroformate, and then reacts with sodium hydroxide to generate propylene carbonate, which is then distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the finished product.
  2. Transesterification method.
  3. Chloropropanol method.
  4. Propylene oxide and carbon dioxide synthesis method Carbon dioxide and propylene oxide react at 150-160°C and 5MPa to generate propylene carbonate, which is fractionated under reduced pressure to obtain finished products.

The above methods have been industrialized, but the first three methods have high production costs and poor product quality, so they are gradually replaced by the fourth method.

Propylene oxidation and carbon dioxide synthesis method. This method is a synthetic method developed in the laboratory in recent years.
