Phenolic resin, also known as bakelite, is a resin made by condensing phenol and formaldehyde under catalyst conditions, neutralizing and washing with water, among which phenol and formaldehyde resins are the most important. Solid phenolic resin is a yellow, transparent, amorphous block substance, slightly reddish due to the presence of free phenol. The average specific gravity of the entity is about 1.7. It is easily soluble in alcohol, insoluble in water, and stable to water, weak acid and weak base solutions. It is a resin made by condensing phenol and formaldehyde under catalyst conditions, neutralizing and washing with water. It is also the earliest artificially synthesized polymer material in the world and is still very important today. Due to the different catalysts used, it can be divided into two categories: thermosetting and thermoplastic. Phenolic resin has good acid resistance, mechanical properties, and heat resistance, and is widely used in anti-corrosion engineering, adhesives, flame retardant materials, grinding wheel manufacturing and other industries.
Phenolic foam is a kind of foam material commonly used for heat preservation, sound insulation, flame retardancy, etc., which is prepared by uniformly mixing phenolic resin with additives (such as surfactants, foam leveling agents, etc.) and then foaming and curing in a mold. Decentralized foam materials have the characteristics of low thermal conductivity, good fire resistance, high thermal stability, low cost, etc. In recent years, they have been rapidly developed mainly in terms of increasing toughness, improving mechanical strength and reducing acidity.
Its high temperature resistance is the most important characteristic of phenolic resin. Even at high temperatures, it can maintain structural integrity and dimension stability. This is why phenolic resins are used in high-temperature fields such as refractory, friction, adhesives, and foundry industries.
Binder is an important use of phenolics. Phenolic Resin is versatile and compatible with many organic and inorganic materials. A properly designed phenolic is a resin that wets very quickly. After cross-linking it, the resin can provide mechanical strength, heat resistance, and electrical properties required for abrasives.
To give paper, cotton fabric, glass, asbestos, and other materials mechanical strength and electrical properties, phenolic water-soluble resin or alcohol-soluble resin can be used. Examples include clutch plates, filter paper and electrical insulation.
Under inert gases at temperatures of around 1000 degrees, phenolic will produce a large amount of residual carbon. This is beneficial to the structural stability. This phenolic resin characteristic is another reason it can be used as a refractory material.
Comparing phenolic resins to other resin systems, they have low smoke and low toxicities. Under combustion conditions, the phenolic resins produced using scientific formulas slowly decompose into hydrogen, hydrocarbons and water vapor. Smoke produced by the decomposition is small, and its toxicity is low. This makes phenolic resin ideal for areas that have strict safety standards, like mines, guardrails, and the construction industry.
The cross-linked phenolic resin is resistant to decomposition by any chemical substance. Gasoline, petroleum, alcohols, ethylene glycols, grease, and other hydrocarbons are examples. It is used for kitchen and bathroom appliances (phenolic carbon fibre), drinking water purification (bakelite tea trays), and liquid containers (national standard GB05009.069–2003).
The glass transition temperature will be increased by heat treatment and the resin’s properties will be improved. The glass transition temperature is comparable to the melting point of polypropylene and other crystalline solids. The glass transition temperature for phenolic resins is directly related to the initial curing temperature. Heat treatment can improve the fluidity and reaction of cross-linked resin. The heat treatment process can also reduce shrinkage and remove volatile phenols. It can improve dimensional stability, high temperature strength, and hardness. The resin tends to shrink as well as become brittle. The initial curing conditions and resin system will determine the post-treatment resin temperature rise curve.
The foam plastic is made by foaming the phenolic resin. Comparing materials like polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, and polyurethane, the foam is more durable. It has excellent flame retardant properties, which made it the dominant material on the market during its early years. It is low-priced, light, rigid, has excellent dimensional stability, is resistant to chemical corrosion, is flame retardant, self extinguishing, does not produce smoke, is flame penetration resistant, is flame retardant and flame retardant.
Phenolic plastic foam is one of the fastest-growing types of foam. The scope of applications continues to expand and the consumption continues to increase. Research and development is quite active both at home and abroad. The weakness of phenolic is its high porosity and brittleness. Therefore, improving the toughness of the foam will improve its performance.

Phenolic resins are used in adhesives, mastics, laminates, impregnation products, surface coatings, foundry sands, etc.
Compression molding powder for producing molded products is one of the main uses of phenolic resin. The resin is impregnated with fillers and mixed with other additives by roller pressing, screw extrusion and emulsion method, and then crushed and sieved to obtain compression molding powder. Wood powder is often used as filler. In order to manufacture certain high electrical insulation and heat-resistant parts, inorganic fillers such as mica powder, asbestos powder, quartz powder, etc. are also used. Compression molding powder can be made into various plastic products by molding, transfer molding and injection molding. Thermoplastic phenolic resin compression molding powder is mainly used to manufacture electrical parts such as switches, sockets, plugs, daily necessities and other industrial products. Thermosetting phenolic resin compression molding powder is mainly used to manufacture high electrical insulation parts. Reinforced phenolic plastics are various reinforced plastics that are impregnated with various fibers and fabrics with phenolic resin (mainly thermosetting phenolic resin) solution or emulsion, and then dried and pressed to form various reinforced plastics. It not only has high mechanical strength and good comprehensive performance, but also can be machined. Phenolic plastics reinforced with glass fiber, quartz fiber and their fabrics are mainly used to manufacture various brake friction pads and chemical anti-corrosion plastics; phenolic plastics reinforced with high-silica glass fiber and carbon fiber are important ablation-resistant materials in the aerospace industry.
Rosin-modified phenolic resins, butanol-etherified phenolic resins, tert-butyl phenolic resins, and p-phenyl phenolic resins all have good miscibility with tung oil and linseed oil and are important raw materials for the coating industry. The first two are used to prepare low- and medium-grade paints, and the latter two are used to prepare high-grade paints.
Thermosetting phenolic resins are also important raw materials for adhesives. Single phenolic resins are brittle and are mainly used for bonding plywood and precision casting sand molds. Adhesives based on phenolic resins modified by other polymers occupy an important position in structural adhesives. Among them, phenolic-nitrile, phenolic-acetal, phenolic-epoxy, phenolic-epoxy-acetal, phenolic-nylon and other adhesives have the characteristics of good heat resistance and high bonding strength. Phenolic-nitrile and phenolic-acetal adhesives also have excellent properties such as tensile resistance, impact resistance, and resistance to moisture and heat aging, and are excellent varieties of structural adhesives.
Mainly made of thermoplastic linear phenolic resin as raw material, after melt spinning, immersed in an aqueous solution of polyformaldehyde and hydrochloric acid for curing treatment, formaldehyde cross-linked body structure fiber is obtained. In order to improve the strength and modulus of the fiber, it can be melt-mixed with 5% to 10% polyamide and then spun. This type of fiber is golden or yellow-brown, with a strength of 11.5-15.9 cN/dtex, outstanding flame retardancy, a limiting oxygen index of 34, and instantaneous contact with an oxygen-acetylene flame of nearly 7500°C. It does not melt or burn, has self-extinguishing properties, and is resistant to concentrated hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid, but has poor resistance to sulfuric acid, nitric acid and strong alkali. It is mainly used as protective clothing and flame-resistant fabrics or interior decorations, and can also be used as insulation, heat insulation and insulation, filter materials, etc. It can also be processed into low-strength, low-modulus carbon fibers, activated carbon fibers and ion exchange fibers.
Several common forms of thermosetting phenolic resins in the field of corrosion protection: phenolic resin coatings; phenolic resin fiberglass, phenolic-epoxy resin composite fiberglass; phenolic resin cement, mortar; phenolic resin impregnation, pressed graphite products. The curing forms of thermosetting phenolic resins are divided into two types: room temperature curing and heat curing. For room temperature curing, non-toxic room temperature curing agent NL can be used, or benzenesulfonyl chloride or petroleum sulfonic acid can be used, but the latter two materials are more toxic and irritating. It is recommended to use low-toxic and high-efficiency NL curing agent. Fillers can be selected from graphite powder, porcelain powder, quartz powder, and barium sulfate powder. Diabase powder should not be used.
It is mainly a foaming material of phenolic resin. The characteristics of phenolic foam products are thermal insulation, heat insulation, fire prevention, and light weight. As a new material for thermal insulation, energy saving, and fire prevention, it can be widely used in central air-conditioning systems, lightweight thermal insulation color steel plates, house thermal insulation and energy reduction insulation, thermal insulation materials for chemical pipelines (especially deep low temperature insulation), and thermal insulation fields in places such as vehicles and ships. Phenolic foam is known as the king of thermal insulation because of its low thermal conductivity and good thermal insulation performance. Phenolic foam not only has low thermal conductivity and good thermal insulation performance, but also has many advantages such as flame retardancy, good thermal stability, light weight, low smoke, low toxicity, heat resistance, high mechanical strength, sound insulation, strong resistance to chemical corrosion, and good weather resistance. Phenolic foam plastic has abundant raw materials, low price, simple production and processing, and the product has a wide range of uses.
