What is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin is a kind of petroleum processing product. Paraffin is amorphous but has a distinct crystal structure. There is also artificial paraffin. It is a lubricating oil fraction obtained from crude oil distillation, which is refined by solvent, dewaxed by solvent, or wax frozen crystallized, squeezed dewaxed to make wax paste, and then deoiled by solvent and refined to obtain flake or needle-shaped crystals. It is used to make higher fatty acids, higher alcohols, matches, candles, waterproofing agents, ointments, electrical insulation materials, etc.

Paraffin is a mixture of solid higher alkanes, and the molecular formula of the main component is CnH2n+2, where n=17~35. The main components are straight-chain alkanes, and there are also a small amount of alkanes with individual branches and monocyclic cycloalkanes with long side chains; the main straight-chain alkanes are n-docosane (C22H46) and n-octacosane (C28H58).

Paraffin Wax Uses

  • Crude paraffin wax is mainly used to make matches, fiberboards, tarpaulins, etc. due to its high oil content. After adding polyolefin additives to paraffin wax, its melting point increases, and its adhesion and flexibility increase. It is widely used in moisture-proof and waterproof packaging paper, cardboard, surface coatings of certain textiles, and candle production.
  • After paper is immersed in paraffin wax, various wax papers with good waterproof properties can be made, which can be used for packaging of food, medicine, metal rust prevention and printing industry; after paraffin wax is added to cotton yarn, it can make textiles soft, smooth and elastic; paraffin wax can also be used to make detergents, emulsifiers, dispersants, plasticizers, greases, etc.
  • Fully refined paraffin wax and semi-refined paraffin wax have a wide range of uses. They are mainly used as components and packaging materials for food, oral medicines and certain commodities (such as wax paper, crayons, candles, carbon paper), coatings for baking containers, used for fruit preservation, electrical component insulation, improving rubber anti-aging and increasing flexibility, etc. It can also be used for oxidation to generate synthetic fatty acids.
  • As a latent heat storage material, paraffin wax has the advantages of large latent heat of phase change, small volume change during solid-liquid phase change process, good thermal stability, no supercooling phenomenon, and relatively low price. In addition, the development of aviation, aerospace, microelectronics and optoelectronics technology often requires that the large amount of heat dissipation generated by high-power components during operation can only be dissipated within a limited heat dissipation area and in a very short time. Low-melting-point phase change materials can reach the melting point quickly compared to high-melting-point phase change materials, making full use of latent heat to achieve temperature control, and the thermal response time is relatively short. The many advantages of paraffin wax make it widely used in various fields such as aviation, aerospace, microelectronics and other high-tech systems and house energy conservation.
  • GB 2760-96 stipulates that it is allowed to be used as a gum base agent, with a limit of 50.0g/kg. It is also used abroad for anti-sticking in the production of glutinous rice paper, with a dosage of 6g/kg. In addition, it is also widely used in moisture-proof, anti-sticking and oil-proof food packaging materials. It is suitable for components of food chewing gum, bubble gum and pharmaceutical gold oil, as well as waxes that directly contact food and medicines such as heat carriers, demoulding, tableting, and polishing (made from waxy fractions of petroleum or shale oil by cold pressing, etc.).

Classification and Function of Paraffin Wax

  1. Microcrystalline paraffin wax
Microcrystalline paraffin wax is mainly composed of chain hydrocarbons, cycloalkanes and some straight-chain hydrocarbons, with a molecular weight range of about 500-1000. This is a relatively small crystal, soluble in non-polar solvents, insoluble in polar solvents.
  2. Liquid paraffin wax
There are many types of liquid paraffin wax, and their lubricating effects are also different. In the extrusion process, the initial lubrication effect is good and the thermal stability is also good. However, due to poor solubility, the product is easy to become sticky when the amount is too much.
  3. Polyethylene wax
Polyethylene wax refers to low molecular weight polyethylene or partially oxidized low molecular weight polyethylene with a molecular weight of 1500-25000. It is granular, white powder, block and milky white wax. It has excellent fluidity, electrical properties and demolding properties.
  4. Semi-refined paraffin wax
It is a granular white solid, and its relative density increases with the increase of melting point. The product has good chemical stability, moderate oil content, good moisture resistance and insulation properties, and good plasticity. The candles produced by semi-refined paraffin wax have a concentrated flame, no smoke, and no tears. They are used to make candles, crayons, wax paper, general telecommunications equipment, short circuits, light industry, chemical raw materials, etc.
  5. Chlorinated paraffin
Chlorinated paraffin wax is a golden or amber viscous liquid, non-flammable, non-explosive, and extremely low in volatility. It can be dissolved in most organic solvents, but not in water and ethanol. It slowly decomposes when heated to above 120°C, releasing hydrogen chloride gas. Oxides of metals such as iron and zinc will promote its decomposition. Chlorinated paraffin wax is an auxiliary plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride. It has low volatility, is non-flammable, odorless, and non-toxic. This product replaces part of the main plasticizer, which can reduce the cost of the product and reduce the flammability. It is mainly used in polyvinyl chloride cable materials and water pipes, floor materials, films, artificial leather, etc.
