Methylene blue, also known as alkaline lake blue, methine blue, or methylene blue trihydrate, has a molecular formula of C₁₆H₁₈ClN₃S·3H₂O. It is a green, shiny, columnar crystal or crystalline powder. It is odorless, remains unchanged in air, and is readily soluble in water and alcohol. Methylene blue is a commonly used treatment for ornamental fish, effectively treating a variety of diseases such as white spot disease, tail rot, and water mold. Methylene Blue Trihydrate Uses:
Methylene blue has both oxidizing and reducing properties, enabling detoxification and antibacterial activities.
Unlike potassium permanganate and chlorine dioxide, which rapidly kill bacteria, methylene blue is milder and safer to use. It also helps improve respiratory function in fish.
- Quarantine of New Fish
Methylene blue can be used in new fish bags or in the quarantine tank for pre-arrival quarantine. Due to its mild properties, it is particularly suitable for fry and small fish quarantine. It is also commonly used in postpartum care for broodstock. - Controlling Saprolegnia
When used with salt, it can control Saprolegniasis and the resulting tail rot. - Controlling White Spot and Other External Parasites
Spraying a methylene blue solution throughout the tank is slow to take effect (usually requiring a seven-day treatment course, with half the water changed and the solution added to maintain concentration), but it is relatively harmless to the fish. (Recommended by Ito Fish Farm and commonly used by Japanese fish farmers.) Detoxifying Nitrites
If excessive nitrite levels in the aquarium can lead to fish poisoning due to a weak filtration system or other reasons that cause the nitrification system to fail, a methylene blue bath can be used. Its reducing properties can treat methemoglobinemia and prevent nitrite poisoning.Methylene blue has a dyeing effect. The water in the fish tank will turn blue and it will last for a long time.
