Product Introduction:

Isobornyl Acrylate (IBOA) is a monofunctional functional monomer with a special bicyclic structure. Its molecular formula is C13H20O2, and its appearance is usually a colorless or slightly yellow transparent liquid. From a molecular structure point of view, IBOA contains a bulky isobornyl group; this rigid spatial structure not only makes its homopolymer/copolymer (or UV curing network) show a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) tendency, but also makes it show balanced performance in dilution ability, shrinkage control, and chemical resistance. As a low volatility, high boiling point monomer (common data expressed as a reduced pressure boiling point of 119℃ to 121℃/15 mmHg), IBOA occupies an important position in low-solvent/low-VOC formulation concepts.

In actual industrial production, IBOA is often used as a reactive diluent. Compared with traditional monomers, it can maintain the low viscosity of the system while usually improving the hardness and wear resistance of the cured film, and under reasonable proportions, keep good toughness and adhesion to various substrates (finally depending on oligomer skeleton, crosslinking density, and monomer combination). Whether for complex plastic surfaces or precision electronic component protection, IBOA can optimize the comprehensive performance of the final product through its unique structure, thus helping manufacturers obtain technical advantages in fierce market competition.

Isobornyl Acrylate Uses:

This is the most classic application market of IBOA. In UV coatings for consumer electronic products (such as mobile phone and laptop shells), IBOA is used to provide high hardness and wear resistance, while ensuring adhesion of the coating on plastic substrates. In automotive refinish paint and OEM paint, it helps to improve the fullness and weather resistance of the coating.

With the rise of additive manufacturing, the demand for IBOA in 3D printing photosensitive resins has increased significantly. In SLA (stereolithography) and DLP (digital light processing) technologies, the shrinkage rate of resin directly affects the accuracy of the printed model and the degree of warpage deformation. The low shrinkage characteristic of IBOA makes it an ideal component in formulations, helping to print models with accurate size, rich details, and high mechanical strength.

In the adhesive field, IBOA is often used as a modification monomer. In pressure sensitive adhesives, it helps to adjust the cohesion and tack force of the colloid. For UV curing structural adhesives (such as shadowless adhesive used for glass and metal bonding), IBOA not only provides necessary fluidity but also enhances the toughness and water resistance of the adhesive layer after curing, preventing failure in damp-heat aging tests.

Optical fiber coatings have specific requirements for the modulus and refractive index of the material. Due to its unique optical transparency and refractive index characteristics, IBOA is often used in the secondary coating or cladding material of optical fiber coatings. In addition, its moisture-proof performance can also be used in conformal coatings for printed circuit boards (PCB).

In UV inkjet inks, viscosity control is extremely sensitive. IBOA can quickly reduce system viscosity to meet the ejection requirements of the print head, while its reaction activity helps to achieve a balance between low viscosity and curing performance, improving printing efficiency (curing speed needs to be optimized together with photoinitiator system, pigment absorption, film thickness, and energy), ensuring ink droplets quickly set on the substrate to prevent diffusion.

The Advantages of Isobornyl Acrylate

In the formulation design of coatings and inks, viscosity control is the key to processing performance. IBOA has lower viscosity and can efficiently reduce the consistency of the resin system, making it easier to coat or print. Compared with other high Tg monomers, IBOA provides high dilution efficiency without producing strong odor or high volatility like some small molecule monomers, which helps to improve the production environment and meet stricter industrial emission requirements.

One of the most remarkable features of IBOA is that its homopolymer has a higher Tg (usually between 80℃ and 100℃, typical value about 94℃; specific values will change with molecular weight, test method, and other factors). This means that introducing IBOA in UV curing formulations can significantly improve surface hardness, scratch resistance, and wear resistance of the coating without increasing crosslinking density. For application scenarios that require high hardness and toughness, IBOA provides an ideal balance point, avoiding coating brittleness caused by excessive crosslinking.

Polymers often produce volume shrinkage during the curing process, which will lead to internal stress, and then cause adhesion decline or substrate deformation. The bulky bicyclic structure in the IBOA molecule can occupy larger free volume during polymerization, helping to reduce volume shrinkage and shrinkage stress caused by chemical bond formation. This lower shrinkage characteristic makes IBOA have extremely high application value in precision casting, 3D printing (SLA/DLP), and high-precision electronic packaging.

Due to its moderate polarity and low shrinkage, IBOA shows good wetting and adhesion ability to various polar or non-polar substrates. Especially in coatings for PET and engineering plastics (such as PC, ABS), IBOA can assist the formulation to penetrate into microscopic pores on the substrate surface, forming a firm physical and chemical combination. This is particularly critical in automotive interior parts coating, mobile phone shell coating, and special industrial glue fields. For PE, PP, and other low surface energy substrates, surface treatment or matching adhesion promotion schemes are usually still needed to achieve the best effect.

The IBOA molecular structure does not contain groups easy to undergo hydrolysis or oxidation reactions, which gives its cured film excellent chemical resistance and water resistance. It can resist the erosion of weak acids, weak bases, and various solvents. At the same time, its good light stability makes the coating not easy to yellow or chalk in long-term outdoor use, ensuring a long-lasting new appearance of the product.

Industry Q & A

A1: Although both contain an isobornyl group, the main difference lies in polymerization activity and the performance of the cured film. As an acrylate, IBOA’s reaction activity is usually higher than IBOMA (methacrylate), and the curing speed is faster, making it more suitable for UV/EB and other fast curing processes. In terms of physical properties, the cured film of IBOA usually has better flexibility, while IBOMA often provides higher hardness and higher Tg tendency (literature reports of IBOMA homopolymer Tg span is large; need to combine specific polymerization method and test method). In actual selection, if pursuing production efficiency and adhesion, IBOA is usually the preferred choice.

A2: Usually not. On the contrary, due to its saturated bicyclic structure without aromatic conjugated chromophores, IBOA itself has a low yellowing tendency, so it has better light stability. But system yellowing may also come from the photoinitiator, amine synergist, oligomer structure, impurities, and curing conditions, etc., and should be based on weather resistance test results of the specific formulation. In high-performance coatings, using higher purity IBOA usually helps to maintain the clarity and transparency of the system, suitable for outdoor weather-resistant product formulation design.

A3: Acrylate monomers are sensitive to heat and strong light. To prevent accidental polymerization, our produced IBOA usually includes an appropriate amount of inhibitor (such as MEHQ). During storage, the container should be sealed and stored away from light in a cool and ventilated warehouse; the temperature is recommended to be kept below 30℃. In addition, the container should leave certain oxygen space, because the inhibitor needs oxygen to play a role, so long-term storage under a completely anaerobic inert atmosphere is not recommended. As long as standard chemical storage specifications are followed, IBOA is very stable within its shelf life.

A4: IBOA has excellent wetting performance, which makes it have very good compatibility with most common plastic substrates (such as PC, PMMA, ABS, PET, etc.). It can slightly swell the plastic surface, thus forming an “interpenetrating network” effect during crosslinking curing, significantly improving adhesion. For some extremely difficult-to-adhere high-energy surface or low-energy surface plastics, it is recommended to use IBOA together with other multifunctional monomers or adhesion promoters to achieve the best effect.

A5: The modern coating industry is developing in the direction of reducing VOCs (volatile organic compounds). As a reactive diluent, IBOA has low viscosity and participates in the film-forming reaction; it can usually become part of the coating film with a high conversion rate after full curing, thus reducing the proportion of volatile solvent emission. This means it can reduce the use of organic solvents without sacrificing the construction performance of coatings. Due to its high Tg and low shrinkage characteristics, it can directly transform into part of the solid paint film after curing, thus helping to achieve higher solid content and lower solvent dependence.

A6: The addition ratio depends on specific application requirements and target performance. In UV ink and diluent formulations, the addition amount of IBOA is usually between 5% and 25%. If the main purpose is to reduce system viscosity and improve hardness, the proportion can be increased appropriately; if to improve adhesion, a lower proportion may produce significant effects. We recommend customers conduct gradient tests when using for the first time to determine the best balance point in the specific resin system.

A7: This is a typical formulation optimization problem. Although IBOA homopolymer is hard, through copolymerization with long-chain flexible monomers (such as HEA, EHA, etc.) or flexible polyurethane acrylate prepolymers, the performance of the final film can be effectively adjusted. The advantage of IBOA is that it provides “rigid support“, making the coating not easy to deform when stressed, and through compounding other elastic components, it can ensure the coating does not crack under bending or impact. This performance customization through monomer combination is a major application feature of IBOA.

A8: The production process (such as control of esterification reaction, subsequent refining, acid removal, decolorization, and other steps) directly determines the color, acid value, and purity of the monomer. High purity IBOA means lower odor, clearer appearance, and more consistent curing speed. We adopt advanced continuous production equipment and multi-stage rectification technology to ensure the acid value and moisture content of each batch are strictly controlled within industrial standards. At the same time, we will provide a detailed test report for each batch of goods, ensuring customers do not need to frequently adjust process parameters in the production process.
