Isooctyl Palmitate (IOP), also known as 2-ethylhexyl palmitate, is a widely used fine chemical product. It is a colorless to light yellow transparent oily liquid with good chemical and thermal stability. It is insoluble in water, soluble in conventional organic solvents and oils used in the cosmetic industry.
Ethylhexyl palmitate is an ester of 2-ethylhexanol and palmitic acid. It is an alternative to silicone ingredients and brings a “dry and smooth” touch. It helps to adjust the consistency of skin care products.
Ethylhexyl palmitate is a mixture of fatty alcohols and palmitic acid. It can be used as an emollient (to soften and smooth the skin), a texture enhancer and a solvent in cosmetics. Its dosage ranges from 2% to 50%, depending on the type of formula and the desired aesthetic effect. It helps to reduce surface water loss and improve skin quality, especially dry skin. As a solvent, it helps dissolve other ingredients, allowing active ingredients to penetrate the skin more easily. It helps sunscreen active ingredients, such as avobenzone and ethylhexyl triazone, disperse and remain evenly suspended in the formula.

Ethylhexyl palmitate is an ingredient used to improve the texture, feel, and scent of skin care and cosmetic products. It acts as an emollient, solvent, and fixative.
In cosmetics and skin care products, ethylhexyl palmitate acts as an emollient, solvent, and fixative.
Moisturizing
As an emollient, ethylhexyl palmitate reduces water loss from the top layers of the skin, helping to keep the skin moisturized and soft. Emollients also act as lubricants, reducing friction when the skin rubs against the outside world. Ethylhexyl palmitate is considered a non-occlusive emollient, meaning it does not form a film on the surface of the skin. It is often used as an organic alternative to silicones in cosmetic formulations because it provides a dry, smooth, silky feel that is very similar to silicones.
While all skin types can benefit from emollients like ethylhexyl palmitate, emollients are particularly beneficial for people with dry, rough, and/or flaky skin. Emollients can relieve these symptoms and make the skin look and feel soft and smooth. Additionally, emollients may also be appropriate for people with eczema, psoriasis, or other inflammatory skin conditions.
Isooctyl palmitate, isooctyl stearate, and isooctyl oleate are the three most common isooctyl esters in metalworking fluids. They all have the common characteristics of isooctyl esters and have good wettability. Therefore, these three products can provide very good lubricity in pure oil processing, and can also provide processing fluid permeability, such as high-speed cutting, drilling, stamping, etc.
Isooctyl palmitate (2EHP) is a clean-burning, biodegradable monool ester. It is a low-viscosity mono- and diester polyester with good viscosity-temperature performance, volatility and lubricity, and good biodegradability. It is widely used in various industrial oils such as metalworking fluids, rolling oils, and volatile oils. Diesters have good low-temperature performance and antioxidant properties, and can be used as raw materials for aviation compressor oils, aviation greases, and metalworking fluid formulations.
Compared with the other two esters, isooctyl palmitate has the following advantages:
Isooctyl palmitate is different from the other two esters in that the carbon chain of palmitic acid is shorter than that of oleic acid and stearic acid, so within the same unit area, the number of ester groups is more than that of the other two esters. Through the comparison of four-ball wear spot test data, isooctyl palmitate has the best lubricity.
Isooctyl palmitate has little residual carbon and no coking after high-temperature decomposition, and the processed surface is very clean, so it is often used in many processing environments that require no residue and high cleanliness.
