Epichlorohydrin is an organochlorine compound and an epoxide with the chemical formula C3H5ClO.

Epichlorohydrin is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor similar to garlic, insoluble in water, but miscible with most polar organic solvents.

It is very reactive and is used to make glycerin, plastics and elastomers.

In contact with water, epichlorohydrin can hydrolyze to form 3-MCPD, a carcinogen found in food.

Because the molecular structure contains active chlorine atoms and epoxy groups, it is chemically active, and α-chloroglycerol is first generated during hydrolysis, and then glycerol is generated.

Product Usage:

  1. Epichlorohydrin is mainly used in the preparation of glycerol, epoxy resin, chlorohydrin rubber, polyether polyol, bisphenol A glycidyl ether, etc. It is an important raw material for the production of glycerol and glycidyl derivatives.
  2. Epichlorohydrin can also be used as a solvent for paints, cellulose esters, cellulose ethers and resins.
  3. It can also be used as a raw material for organic synthesis for the manufacture of epoxy resins, chlorohydrin rubber, nitroglycerin explosives, glass fiber reinforced plastics, pesticides, medicines, surfactants, coatings, adhesives, plasticizers, reinforced plastics and electrical insulation products.
  4. Epichlorohydrin is an intermediate of the rodenticide muramovir, as well as an intermediate of epoxy resin, synthetic glycerin and other chemical products.

Epichlorohydrin is condensed with bisphenol A in the presence of caustic soda to form bisphenol A chlorohydrin ether, and then its hydrogen chloride is removed with caustic soda to obtain bisphenol A glycidyl ether.

The epichlorohydrin rubber of its next branch is mainly used in the production of oil-resistant hoses, protective covers, shock-proof rubbers, sealing gaskets, diaphragms, can linings, printed parts (cots), fuel tank seals, cable cladding and adhesive, etc.
