Catechol is colorless or white crystal, flammable, and can sublimate. When its solid or solution is exposed to air, it will gradually oxidize and turn brown. It is soluble in water, ether, benzene, chloroform, and easily soluble in hydroxides and pyridine. It has certain toxicity, and the symptoms of poisoning are similar to those of phenol, such as respiratory irritation, increased blood pressure, unstable body temperature, etc.
Catechol, commonly known as pyrophenol, exists in nature in the form of various derivatives. It is an important fine chemical raw material and is widely used in pesticides, medicines, spices, dyes, photosensitive materials, and rubber industries. Catechol can also be used as a rubber hardener, electroplating additive, skin preservative and bactericidal agent, hair dye, photographic developer, color photography antioxidant, fur dyeing developer, and paint anti-skinning agent. Although catechol has a wide range of applications in production, it is also a highly toxic organic substance that is difficult to degrade and seriously pollutes the environment.

About 50% of synthetic catechol is used in the production of pesticides, while the rest is used as a precursor for fine chemicals such as perfumes and pharmaceuticals. It is a common building block in organic synthesis. Several industrially important flavors and fragrances are prepared from catechol. Guaiacol is prepared by methylation of catechol and then converted to vanillin on a scale of about 10 million kg per year (1990). The related monoethyl ether of catechol, guaiacol, can be converted to ethyl vanillin, an ingredient in chocolate confectionery. 3-trans-isocamphor cyclohexanol is widely used as a substitute for sandalwood oil and is prepared from catechol by guaiacol and camphor. Piperonal is a floral flavor prepared by condensation of the methylene diether of catechol with glyoxal and decarboxylation.
In 1879, Josef Maria Eder published his results on the use of catechol as a black-and-white photographic developer, but except for a few special-purpose applications, its use is largely historical. It was rumored to have been used briefly in Eastman Kodak’s HC-110 developer, and is also rumored to be an ingredient in Tetenal’s Neofin Blau developer. It is the main ingredient in Finol produced by Moersch Photochemie in Germany. Modern catechol developers were pioneered by the famous photographer Sandy King. His “PyroCat” formula is popular among modern black and white film photographers. King’s work has since inspired further developments by others, such as Jay De Fehr’s Hypercat and Obsidian Acqua developers, among others.
