Product Usage:

Dimer acid (Pripol 1017) is mainly used as a modifier for polyamide and epoxy resins.

It is widely used as an additive in fuel oil, lubricating oil, calendering oil, hydraulic oil, cutting oil, etc.

Pripol 1017 has similar reactivity to fatty acids in general and can form metal salts with alkali metals, which can be derived into chlorides, amides, esters, diamines, diisocyanates, and other products.

The esters of this product are effective as viscosity stabilizers over a wide range of temperatures.

The metal salts of this product are widely used as thickeners in greases.

Chemical Properties of dimeric acid (Pripol 1017):

Pripol 1017 has a long chain alkane and cyclic structure, good mutual solubility with various solvents, good thermal stability, does not cure in winter, and still has an anti-corrosive effect when the vapor pressure is low, and good lubricity.

Pripol 1017 has a molecular formula of C36H64O4, a molecular weight of 560.91, and a relative density of 0.95. Pure Pripol 1017 is a pale yellow transparent viscous liquid with relatively good thermal stability: it does not crystallize at a low temperature of -20°C and does not lose its transparent fluidity; it does not evaporate at 250°C and does not gel.

When heated in air, the color darkens significantly. Contact with metal ions, especially copper and iron ions, promotes the deterioration of the color.

Pripol 1017 is insoluble in water but soluble in ether, ethanol, acetone, chloroform, benzene, and petroleum solvents.

Dimeric Acid (Pripol 1017) Features:

Dimeric acid (Pripol 1017) is a compound with multiple functional groups and is, therefore, capable of many chemical reactions. It has similar reactivity to unsaturated fatty acids in general and can react with alkali metals to form metal salts and can also be derived into products such as chlorides, amides, esters, and diisocyanates.

  1. Hydrogenation (reduction) reactions: High-pressure hydrogenation of dimeric acids under the catalytic action of copper or sodium chromite can give saturated dimeric alcohols. Dimerol is a viscous fluid and forms an emulsion when it meets water, which effectively prevents oxidation of the dimeric acid.
  2. Reaction with alkali metal hydroxides or amphoteric hydroxides: reaction with sodium, potassium, or lithium hydroxides produces metal saponification with strong emulsification; reaction with aluminum, zinc, or lead hydroxides, etc., produces metal salts insoluble in water.
  3. Esterification reactions: with monohydric alcohols in the presence of a strong acid catalyst to produce esters with low viscosity, soluble in various solvents.
  4. Reaction with halides: reaction with phosphorus trichloride produces chloride, a very useful intermediate for preparing other dimeric acid derivatives. Dimeroyl chloride can also be used directly as a metal preservative.
  5. Reaction with amines: Reaction with monofunctional amines can produce salts, amides, imines, nitriles, etc., respectively, under different conditions.
  6. Reaction with ethylene oxide: Reacting with ethylene oxide to form hydroxyethyl ester, the reaction can be continued under certain conditions until a chain polyoxyethylene ester is formed. This is a very good surfactant.
  7. Polymerisation reactions: dimeric acids can react with polyamines to form polyamides; they react with polyols to form polyesters, which then react with isocyanates to form polyurethanes.
