Ammonium Polyphosphate is abbreviated as APP, which is a kind of nitrogen-containing phosphate, white powder. According to its degree of polymerization, Ammonium Polyphosphate can be divided into three types: oligomerization, medium polymerization, and high polymerization. The greater the degree of polymerization, the lower the water solubility.

Crystalline Ammonium Polyphosphate is water-insoluble and long-chain polyphosphate. There are five variants of type I to V. Among them, the high degree of polymerization crystalline type II ammonium polyphosphate has good water insolubility, high decomposition temperature, and good compatibility with polymer materials, so it has significant advantages in the field of polymer materials.

Compared with halogen-containing flame retardants, Ammonium Polyphosphate has the characteristics of low toxicity, low smoke and inorganic properties. It is a new type of high-efficiency inorganic flame retardant.

The physical and chemical properties of Ammonium Polyphosphate:

The appearance of Ammonium Polyphosphate is white powder, which is close to neutral. It can be mixed with any other substances, but does not change chemically. Short-chain (n≤20) APP is water-soluble, while long-chain (n>20) APP is difficult to dissolve in water. The solubility of industrial APP in water is 1.3g/100mL (15℃) or 3.0g/100mL (25℃). The solubility increases drastically with increasing temperature.

Ammonium Polyphosphate can be hydrolyzed, and the rate of hydrolysis varies with particle size, temperature and pH value. As the temperature rises and the pH value decreases, the hydrolysis speeds up. Ammonium Polyphosphate has good thermal stability. The thermal decomposition temperature is above 250°C. During decomposition, ammonia and water are released and phosphoric acid is generated, which is completely decomposed at 700°C. 6% to 7% of residue remains.
