Cinnamyl Chloride (CAS 21087-29-6): What Every Buyer Needs to Know Before the First Drum Arrives

⇒Quick overview: Real-world handling lessons for Cinnamyl Chloride. The purity specs that trip up buyers. Why shipping this compound takes more paperwork than most. What sdlookchem tests and documents.

The Unlabeled Drum Incident

A few years back, a CRO in Central Europe had an awkward situation at their receiving dock. A shipment of halogenated intermediates came in, all drums stacked on a pallet, and the receiving crew — three people, none of them chemists — had no safety data sheets on hand. The material was fine; no leak, no incident. But when the site safety officer found out later, there was a lengthy debrief about what could have happened.

The SDS had been emailed to procurement. It sat in an inbox. Nobody printed it. Nobody put it on the pallet label. Nobody told receiving to expect a Class 6.1 substance that required gloves and eye protection just to move around the dock.

With Cinnamyl Chloride, that kind of documentation gap is not trivial. This compound is a reactive allylic chloride — skin and respiratory sensitizer, moisture-reactive, degrades on contact with water or strong bases. The hazard information matters on day one, not after someone’s already handled it bare-handed.

Getting the SDS to the receiving team before the shipment arrives — not in the box with the drums — should be standard procedure for any halogenated specialty chemical.

What Breaks Down in Storage

Allylic chlorides are more reactive than buyers sometimes expect. Cinnamyl Chloride (CAS 21087-29-6) is susceptible to hydrolysis in the presence of trace moisture, and to discoloration and HCl evolution if stored warm. Neither is catastrophic in small amounts, but both affect the material’s utility.

A drum that looks fine on the outside can have material that’s yellowed or increased in water content if the seal wasn’t perfect, or if the storage area ran warm during summer. Color check on every drum before use — fresh material is pale yellow to colorless. Significant darkening means the compound has started degrading. Run a GC before committing that material to any synthesis.

Cold, dry, well-ventilated storage. Keep away from anything basic or reducing. Secondary containment in the storage area is worth the trouble.

The Purity Questions Worth Asking

When you’re evaluating supplier quotes for Cinnamyl Chloride, push past the headline purity number. GC 98% tells you what the main component is; it doesn’t tell you what the rest is.

Specific impurities to ask about by name: cinnamyl alcohol (hydrolysis product), (E/Z)-mixture composition (if stereochemistry matters for your application), residual solvent if any solvent was used in the process, and HCl content. Some suppliers test for HCl as a stability indicator; it’s worth knowing whether yours does.

Karl Fischer water content should be routine on a reactive halide CoA. If a supplier’s CoA for Cinnamyl Chloride doesn’t include water content, ask why. The answer tells you something about their QC rigor.

Shipping — More Documentation Than You'd Expect

UN-classified as a Class 6.1 toxic substance in most shipping frameworks. That triggers specific requirements: proper DG declaration, correct UN number and packing group on the package, DG-certified freight, and advance notice to carriers who won’t accept DG shipments without prior arrangement.

Air freight for reactive halides is increasingly difficult, especially in larger quantities. Plan for sea freight and allow time in the schedule. Some forwarders that handle commodity chemicals don’t have DG certification — confirm before booking.

EU importers need the REACH registration status confirmed before any commercial import. US buyers should check TSCA inventory. A few allylic chloride derivatives are on controlled substance or restricted chemical lists in certain markets — worth five minutes of verification before you’re committed.

What sdlookchem Tests and Supplies

Shandong Lookchemical produces Cinnamyl Chloride (CAS 21087-29-6) through in-house synthesis. Batch QC covers GC purity, water content (Karl Fischer), appearance/color, and any customer-specified additional tests. Full GHS SDS provided with every shipment. Export documentation includes the DG paperwork needed for international freight.

Packaging in appropriate containers for reactive halogenated compounds — this is not a compound we put in standard brown glass. MOQ 1 kg. Bulk quantities on request.

Technical questions go to in-house chemists, not a sales script. If you need to discuss spec details, method of synthesis, or stability data, that conversation is available before you commit to an order.
